"Dem Deutschen Volke"
Above you see the Reichstag, seat of the German parliament.
The inscription "Dem Deutschen Volke" means "To
the German People" and was attached to the building in
December 1916, amidst World War I. Emperor William II initially
objected, preferred "Dem Deutschen Reiche" - "To
the German Reich". Contemporary journalists found "Seid
einig" - "Be United" appropriate and some Berliners
cynically recommended "Dem Deutschen Heere" - "To
the German Army".
